益生菌是有益於身體健康的細菌,益生菌幫助維持腸胃道健康、調節免疫、改善過敏、改善代謝症候群這些功效已被科學研究證實。隨著Gut-Brain-Axis的研究蓬勃發展,極少數益生菌可以經由神經系統、免疫系統、代謝等路徑影響中樞神經系統,調節mind, mood與behaviors,被稱為精神益生菌Psychobiotics。


我們研究室研究主軸是精神益生菌的開發與機制探討,已經發表亞洲第一株精神益生菌Lactobacillus plantarum PS128。目前持續利用憂鬱、焦慮、壓力、巴金森氏症、妥瑞症、自閉症等各種動物模式,開發精神益生菌。我們也已經建立運用細胞模式探討益生菌的益生特性與免疫反應,包括:inflammatory bowel diseases、irritable bowel syndrome、allergy、immunomodulation等。
